The Book Thief- Markus Zusak

The Book Thief is a novel written by Markus Zusak. It is a story narrated by ‘Death’. Death tells the story of a girl, Liesel Meminger. The story is set in a sad neighborhood on Himmel Street, in the fictional town of Molching, Germany. The story starts in 1939 in the beginning of WW2 and continues through the war years.  After Liesel’s foster father finds a book, ‘The Grave Diggers Handbook’, that she has been hiding, her foster father decided to teach her how to read. Further into the story, they find out that Liesel’s mother disappeared after failed attempts to contact her. Hans, Liesel’s foster father is also hiding a jew named Max after his dad saved Han’s life when they were both German soldiers in WW1. The story ends with Liesel’s death after living a long happy life.
